Quick Tip: Moving the Central Administration web site

Posted by Christian Dam on August 27, 2008

Normally, the advise is to use the SharePoint Product and Technologies Configuration Wizard to move the Central Administration web site. It works fine when both the new and old server are online. However, if the old server hosting Central Administration has crashed, moving the Central Administration web site to a new server using the Wizard often result in the incorrect references to the old Central Adminstration URL.

So, instead of using the wizard you can use the following commands:

On the old server (if it is available):

Psconfig -cmd adminvs -unprovision

On the new server:

Psconfig -cmd adminvs -provision -port <port> -windowsauthprovider onlyusentlm

Psconfig is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\bin – also known as the 12-hive.

Quick Tip: Delete extended Web Application

Posted by Christian Dam on July 17, 2008

The extended web applications are not listed in the “normal” web application list and cannot be deleted through Delete Web Application in Central Administration.

Use this approach to delete the extended web apps:

  1. Start Central Administration
  2. Go to Application Management
  3. Click Remove SharePoint from IIS Web Site
  4. Select the web application that the extended web app was extended from
  5. Select which extention/zone to delete
  6. Keep or delete the IIS Web site
  7. Finally click OK

Quick Tip: Delete list items from a list

Posted by Christian Dam on July 2, 2008

It doesn’t seem there is a built-in way in MOSS/WSS to delete all list items from a list without deleting the entire list. A workaround is to save the list a a template without content, delete the list and recreate it using the template.

However, there is a gl-deletelistitem option in Gary’s STSADM Custom Extentions that can be used. It works well but it is rather slow so for large lists the template method may still be faster.

Quick Tip: booting Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V

Posted by Christian Dam on June 15, 2008

If you attempt to start VMWare Player on a Windows Server 2008 with the Hyper-V role installed, Windows Server 2008 crashes. The solution is to boot Windows Server without Hyper-V. Ben has the solution so check it out if you – like me – from time to time need to run VMWare images.

Quick Tip: The Magic Shift-Right-Click-combo

Posted by Christian Dam on May 14, 2008

Not SharePoint related at all, but useful none the less.

I noticed two small tricks in Windows Explorer that I’d like to share. Shift/Right-click a file or folder will reveal some new possibilities:

Shift/Right-Click Folder:

I especially like the Open Command Windows Here option.

Shift/Right-Click File:

Here I find the Copy as Path option useful.

This works on Windows Server 2008 – I have no clue if it works on other Windows versions.

Quick Tip: No network connection after upgrading Hyper-V from Beta to RC0

Posted by Christian Dam on April 24, 2008

I upgraded my main VPC host from Hyper-V Beta to Hyper-V RC0 today. My VPC already had the Integration Services installed and I the Hyper-V RC0 update from Windows Update (949219) on the VPCs before upgrading the host.

Well, something must have gone wrong as my VPCs lost the NICs and thus all network connection. When I tried to Reinstall the Integration Services, I got the following error message:

“The Microsoft Hyper-V Integration Components are already installed. Please use Windows Update to upgrade the installation”

Good advise but pretty difficult to do when the NIC is gone …

The solution was pretty straight forward, however: delete the NIC in Device Manager and Scan for Hardware changes:

  1. Start Server Manager
  2. Navigate go Server Manager -> Diagnostics -> Device Manager
  3. Right-click the NIC and select Uninstall
  4. Chose to remove the device drivers if you have the option
  5. Right-click your Server Name and select Scan for hardware changes
  6. The NIC should now be recognized and have its drivers installed automatically

 Update:

One of my VPCs didn’t have the 949219-update installed and the remove-the-NIC-and-scan-for-hardware-changes trick didn’t work.

The solution to this problem was as follows:

  1. Create a new virtual HD
  2. Mount the VHD in a VPC with access – if you have one
  3. Download the update files and copy them to the VHD :
  4. Unmount the VHD
  5. Mount the VHD in the VPC with the missing update
  6. Install the update and reboot

Oh, and BTW – this problem is only related to VPCs running Windows Server 2008 as a Guest OS as far as I can tell.

Quick Tip: Allowing Site Collection administrators to track storage usage

Posted by Christian Dam on March 29, 2008

If you assign a Quota Template when creating a Site Collection, your site administrators get the possibility of tracking the storage consumption.

The option can be found in Site Administration: Setting Settings -> Storage space allocationor via the direct link <site>/_layouts/storman.aspx.

Quick Tip: The Hyper-V service is not available

Posted by Christian Dam on February 21, 2008

I have been using Hyper-V on my virtualization host since Windows Server 2008 RTM was releases and I am so happy about it, that I wanted to install Windows Server 2008 on my laptop as well. I have a Dell Latitude D830 that should be meet the requirements.

However, after installing Hyper-V it failed to start and all it told me was: “The Hyper-V service is not available

I found a great article that describes what could be wrong! I followed the steps and sure enough, Hyper-V became available. I just wonder why I didn’t see this when installing the server. Anyway, once Hyper-V was installed correctly, I could change all the locale settings back to being localized and Hyper-V was still OK.
